The Pros and Cons of Intermittent Fasting

What is intermittent fasting? Well, intermittent fasting is a popular health trend which focuses on not eating at all for specific periods of time. Now, with that focus in mind, there are certain pros and cons that should be take into account:

  • Pro: Can help prevent disease

Intermittent fasting can help lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure which are very important factors that should be managed for disease prevention.

  • Con: Difficult to Stick To

To successfully perform this fast, you must go a designated period of time without eating anything at all. Then you eat a specific number of calories in a specific amount of time and repeat this pattern in order to create a caloric deficit.

  • Pro: Promotes Improved Body Composition

Intermittent fasting allows you to use your stored sugars as fuel and to then tap into fat stores. When this happens, we begin to lose body fat.

  • Con: Can Affect Your Social Life

Fasting takes a lot of commitment especially when it comes to social gatherings. Having to say no and watch while others enjoy can be exhausting. While you’re fasting you'll experience lower energy levels than usual and might just not have the energy to go out and about.

  • Pro: Promotes Healthy Brain Function

A huge plus with intermittent fasting is that it increases the rate of neurogenesis in the brain. This is because the body is going into ketosis which is a process that uses fat as a fuel source in order to boost energy.

  • Con: Increased Risk for Negative Health Consequences

Before beginning intermittent fasting, it is important to note that many already active individuals may suffer from hormonal imbalances as a result. For women, this could lead to irregular cycles and potential for fertility issues. Other issues could include insomnia, increased stress, or thyroid problems.

Clearly intermittent fasting has its benefits, but it also is not without its downsides. At Wellth, we highly encourage you to consider both before taking part in it. After all, your health and wellness has and always will be our top priority.
