Expectations vs. Reality: Going Green

Sustainability is all that anyone is ever talking about these days. It’s the hot button topic for anyone who believes that our responsibility as humans is to take care of this one planet that we’ve been given. Our throw-away culture has created an environment where some of the choices that are required aren’t the easiest. That’s not how it’s touted in the media, though. People think that being sustainable is simple! The reality, well, it’s not that easy.

Save water

Expectation: Use less water!

Reality: While this is a lovely thought and for some people, it can be as simple as turning off the water while you’re brushing your teeth or taking shorter showers, the reality is that using less water is a lot more complicated than that. The biggest waste of water involves old pipes and water systems that use water inefficiently, often by using too much water or by leaking through poor joints of the pipes. Replacing these pipes can be prohibitively expensive, and so, unfortunately, is not the idealistic solution that everyone wants it to be.

At the checkout

Expectation: I'm going to bring my reusable bags with me every time I go shopping.

Reality: It’s not always easy to remember to bring your reusable bags with me so instead of checking out with plastic, if you forget your bags, checkout with paper so at least you can more easily recycle it.

My wardrobe

Expectation: Use fewer synthetic fabrics.

Reality: Almost everything in this world uses plastic in some way. When was the last time you saw all-natural clothing that was affordable at your local Wal-Mart? 100% cotton clothes still have polyester threads holding them together, and unfortunately, cotton is not the most sustainable fabric. Fast fashion is one of the most wasteful industries but changing that is more difficult than it seems on the face of it. Second-hand clothes shopping can reduce much of the waste of fast fashion, and looking for all-natural fabrics that will wear longer and harder than cheap synthetic fabrics will help. Just please, don’t go out and throw away your entire wardrobe in search of a new one. We don’t want to compound the problem in the search for a solution!

Cleanliness at home

Expectation: Use clean products.

Reality: At last! A solution that is easy and affordable to succeed in! Wellth offers a variety of products that are not only clean for your household, but also clean for your planet. Items such as our Earthy Laundry Detergent and our One With Nature Triple Milled Soap are wonderful alternatives to synthetic chemicals that otherwise pollute your environment and your home.

At Wellth, we are proud of our natural products. However, we must stress there is a difference between expectation and reality. Fortunately, the reality is absolutely worth it and so are you.
